Italian Newtown: An Informative Article

Italian Newtown is a suburb of Sydney, Australia. It is located in the local government area of The Hills Shire, and it was one of the first suburbs to be developed by John Hilly & Sons Pty Ltd. It has been home to many famous people, such as Olympic swimmer Shane Gould and Italian restaurateur Antonio Carluccio.

What should I know about this?

The history of Italian in Newtown began with purchasing a tract of land in 1855 by John and George Hilly. The brothers agreed that they would take it in turns to choose the next block as each subdivision was sold, so it is possible either or both of them bought some at different times. When it came time for John’s turn, he chose some land on Etonville Road (now called Boundary Road). It became known as New Town after Newtown, which was developed firstly around 1794 southeast and near west from Sydney CBD. Secondly, Italian Newtown development occurred between 1880-1890s, further northeast past Liverpool Street towards the Camperdown area.
