A Brief History Of The Tattoo Shop
Tattoo shops have been applying ink to bodies for longer than you might thin; the oldest one is in Copenhagen and has been in business since the 19th century. Several other shops in the US and UK have been operating since the early 20th century, although most shops have been open less than a few decades, partly because of constantly changing regulations. Tattooing itself is a lot older than that though, and the art has been practiced for thousands of years; the oldest discovered tattooed body is about 5,000 years old. The ancient Chinese practiced tattooing, often to signify slave ownership, as did the ancient Egyptians, and native American cultures also have a long history of the art. Captain Cook was amazed to discover tattooed natives during his 18th century voyage to the South Pacific, and is largely credited for popularizing the art form.
