Land ownership has existed since time memorial, with different land acquisition processes existing in various societies, cultures and religions. Land, considered as a free gift from nature is basically the main factor of production. A factor that is directly or indirectly needed and whose location is highly valued. Land ownership has been controlled by a requisite Land Tensure System guiding on who and how much land one can live on, own or work on and for how long.

Categories of land tenure

In most country, land ownership is basically given to either of the authorized institutions which defines the land tenure. Land can either be community or customary owned, privately owned or state owned. With every form of tenure comes rules and orders governing it in order to ensure the land is put to its intended use and care.
