What Is Disability Management?
Disability management is a discipline that involves reducing the impact of disabilities on individuals and their employers. In the area of employment, it is a field of practice that focuses on how employers manage workers’ disability in the workplace and includes preventing injuries that cause disability, helping employees return to work after suffering a disabling event and providing accommodation for disabled employees in the workplace environment. Disability management specialists are engaged to help with work-related disability issues.
One of the major focuses of managing disability in the workplace is the evaluation and prevention of discrimination against disabled employees. This can negatively effect individuals as well as employers where there is disparate treatment of abled and disabled employees. The field also focuses on organizational health, the cost if disabilities in the workplace and the way that productivity is affected within specific worksites and organizational units.
