What Is Responsible Travel?
Most people would probably agree that responsible travel is a good thing, although many of us aren’t quite sure what that means. Traveling responsibly is about better understanding and appreciating the places you visit. Learning a few phrases of the language, interacting with the locals, eating food more typical of that place are all good examples. And it isn’t necessary to ‘rough it’ to travel more responsibly; you can still do so if you stay at a top hotel or take a package tour. We all affect the places we visit to some extent, and making sure it’s a positive effect is part of being responsible. It can perhaps be summed up by looking at the difference between a tourist and a traveler; one simply observes while the other immerses themselves in the experience and the culture of the place they’re visiting.
